Gallery 2 Sculptures
With every new production run, our team of "Spark Whisperers" apply new and innovative techniques, including rotations, multiple beam passes, and innovative 2D and 3D masking techniques. We irradiate as many as six different planes to create complex 3D shapes, or physically rotate specimens while they're being irradiated by a high-energy electron beam. We continue to push technical boundaries while building upon hard-won knowledge gained from years of experience. The figures on this page are no exception - they reflect the current state of the art in making Captured Lightning® sculptures. See Gallery 1 for information about how these sculptures were created and why. Please visit our site often, as we add new specimens from our latest production runs. We combine shipping for multiple items.

    How to display your sculptures:
The images on our site were taken using lighting conditions which highlight the delicate internal patterns. For best results, actively illuminate sculptures from below or along an edge using LED's or another source of bright light. This way, light is reflected by the tiny mirror-like fractures, causing the internal Lichtenberg figure to glow brilliantly with the color(s) of the light source(s). Illuminating a sculpture using only transmitted light, such as looking through the sculpture to a bright window, actually reduces the observed detail and inner beauty. We offer a wide variety of standard and custom LED light bases that optimally illuminate our sculptures. As with snowflakes, every Lichtenberg figure is unique. Although your figure may differ from the examples shown on our web site, we guarantee it will be of similar, or better, quality. Most specimens have small fractures and light charring near the exit point of the discharge. This is a natural consequence of the high energy discharge process.

By adding suitably engraved or lettered metal plaques to our bases, Captured Lightning sculptures make memorable gifts or unique academic, corporate, or retirement awards. We also offer custom laser engraving for our larger flat sculptures. Captured Lightning sculptures are treasured works of scientific art that will enhance the decor of any room or executive suite. Because demand is high and quantities limited, we recommend ordering soon to avoid possible disappointment. We combine shipping on multiple items whenever possible.

Larger 2 1/2 inch and three inch "Ball Lightning" spheres are similar to our Style 29 two inch spheres, but oh, what a difference the larger size makes! Created from polished crystal clear acrylic orbs. When supported by a napkin ring (included), light can be directed from below by one of our many multicolor or white LED light bases. For multicolor color changing effects, we recommend using the CR35MC leaded crystal light base, ROT45MC rotating light base, or the BD752MC (for locations with subdued lighting) or BD753MC base. For brighter areas, we suggest using a base with brighter white LED's such as the LM2690, LM2692, or LM2699 rosewood white LED light base, or the BD753W base. AC adapters for the ROT45MC and BD753MC are only available only for US power. The ROT45MC can be operated off three AA batteries (no rotation to extend battery life).  All other recommended light bases are available with AC adapters for North American, EC, UK, or Australian power options.

Please note: Spheres should not be left in direct sunlight or illuminated by nearby halogen lights since focused light may cause excessive heating and damage to nearby objects.

3.5" diameter Magnabrite® light capturing magnifiers. These precision optical elements were part of an experimental run, so there are only a limited number in existence. They really have to be seen to be believed! Be sure to click on above image to see larger images with various lighting options. We recommend illuminating with the ROT45MC multicolor base or the LM2692  rosewood white LED light base. AC adapters for the ROT45MC are available only for US power. The LM2692 is available with AC adapters for North American, EC, UK, or Australian power options.

We also suggest getting a round walnut base to cradle your sculptures and help prevent scratching when used on a flat surface. Walnut base may not be usable with some light bases. Polyurethane protectors are included to optionally protect top surface of base and bottom of sculpture.

These are stately 2" dia. by 6" long Captured Lightning cylinders.  Some sculptures were rotated as they were being irradiated in order to generate a cylindrically-shaped layer of charge deep inside. Other sculptures were passed through the beam twice to create two separate but linked discharge regions. When discharged, the rotated specimens formed discharges that followed the cylindrical layer, forming a hollow cylindrically-shaped captured lightning pattern. Those specimens that were passed through the beam twice formed beautiful branching "Windblown Lightning"  between the two charge layers, similar to our smaller Style 13A sculptures.

We recommend using the
CR35MC ROT45MC, BD752MC, or BD753MC multicolor light bases or the LM2690 or LM2692 round wooden white LED light base. AC adapters for the ROT45MC are available only for North American power. The other bases can be supplied with AC adapters for North American, EC, UK, or Australian power options.
