Incredible 12" x 12" x 1" Museum-Quality
Lichtenberg Figures with polished edges
We made another batch of these in March, 2008
We've
only produced a relatively small number of these very large specimens.
They were
carefully irradiated and then manually discharged along
one edge. A couple were discharged in the interior. The noise when
these are discharged is similar to a gunshot! The dendritic discharges
virtually fill the entire area of
the panels, and the specimens shown here are representative of
all the available figures. These are truly museum quality
specimens for very discriminating collectors. We believe these are
among some of the very best large Lichtenberg Figures in existence, and
you'll only find these at Stoneridge Engineering.
When
we charge figures of this size, we're very concerned about the
considerable electrical energy stored within. We take great care to
discharge them safely. The interior is charged to approximately 2.2
million volts, the discharge is quite energetic, loud(!),
and brilliant. In fact, we estimate that each of these 12" x 12"
specimens store almost 1 kilojoules of electrical energy. This level
can be extremely dangerous, especially if we were to accidentally
become part of the current path during a discharge. But, as we're sure
you'll agree,
the
results were well worth the efforts and risks.
We believe that this is the first time that figures of this size have turned
out so stunningly beautiful. The only other publicly viewable specimen
of this size resides at the Oak Ridge Associated Universities' Health Physics Historical Instrumentation Museum Collection.
The beauty and symmetry of our large specimens is a tribute to the
knowledge and hard-won experience of the physicists who are part of our
Lichtenberg Figures team, Bill Hathaway and Kim Goins of GCL
Laboratories.
We
also recommend displaying these using our custom solid walnut light bases.
These are designed with a velvet-lined cavity that gently, but firmly,
holds your figure in a vertical position while simultaneously bathing
it with light from an array of Light Emitting Diodes (LED's). These are
available in white, "electric blue", or with a couple of versions of
multicolor color-changing
LED's. The price per figure is $499 plus $28.00 for
domestic S&H and insurance. Bases are $168 (for a white or
"electric blue" base) and $198 for multicolor, or $250 for an IR
controlled multicolor base. Shipping within the US is $14.
